iPod shuffle 2nd generation will not charge

I have an iPod shuffle 2nd generation that will not charge. I get a message on my macbook pro saying Disc you inserted was not readable by this computer. When I open iTunes, it says iTunes has detected the iPod that appears to be corrupted. Restore it before it can be used with iTunes. Also try disconnecting and reconnect the iPod. I did disconnect it and nothing happened. I opened the Utility disc which said Partision map not supported and SMART status not supported. I have no idea what any of this means. I just want to be able to charge it again. Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

MacBook Pro, iOS 9.3.2, El Capitan OX 10.11.5
